What is the Asian Subterranean Termite?

The Asian subterranean termite (Coptotermes gestroi) is an invasive termite species that lives underground and builds massive colonies, often numbering in the millions, that forage through soil to find wood. Unlike drywood termites, which nest inside the wood itself, this species tunnels up from the ground, making mud tubes along foundations, seawalls, and tree trunks to reach its food source.

It isn't native to Florida and needs a warm, tropical climate to survive, which is why established colonies are found almost exclusively in a handful of southeast Florida port cities, including Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Riviera Beach, and Key West. Dr. Thomas Chouvenc, the UF/IFAS urban entomologist behind much of this research, has explained that boats have turned what used to be a rare, accidental event, termites crossing oceans, into something that happens with far more regularity. A city with as much marine traffic as Fort Lauderdale is naturally going to see more of it.

Hybrid Termite Colonies Discovered in Fort Lauderdale

In late 2024, researchers surveying a Fort Lauderdale city park found something that hadn't been documented before: a termite colony showing traits of both the Asian subterranean termite and the Formosan subterranean termite, another highly destructive invasive species. The discovery suggests the two species can interbreed where their ranges overlap, and Fort Lauderdale is one of the few places in the world where that overlap exists. Researchers are still studying what that could mean for how these colonies spread and how difficult they may be to manage going forward.

Signs of Termite Damage to Watch For

None of this is meant to cause alarm, but it is a reason for Fort Lauderdale property owners, especially those near canals, marinas, or with boats of their own, to take termite prevention seriously rather than assuming it's a problem for someone else. A few things worth watching for:
