Where Do Drywood Termites Live?

Drywood termites are a species of termite that requires no contact with soil and very little environmental moisture. They burrow into the woodwork, creating galleries against and with the grain of the wood. These galleries are linked by minor holes which allow a single termite to enter and exit at a time.

These termites can infest various wooden components of a home, including:

  • Structural timbers
  • Window and door frames
  • Doors
  • Flooring
  • Furniture and décor
  • Trim

Signs of a Drywood Termite Infestation

If a colony of drywood termites has infested your home, you may uncover some signs that indicate their presence, such as:

  • Termite droppings: A sure sign of a termite infestation is the presence of their droppings, called frass. Drywood termites remove fecal pellets from their galleries through kick-out holes, creating noticeable mounds below the infested area. A drywood termite’s feces is distinctive – they are hexagonal in shape and uniform in size (approximately one millimeter long).
  • Wood damage: The galleries created by termites damage wood in the infested area; their appearance is a sure sign of termites. These galleries can entirely consume the wood within a piece of lumber or other wooden structure. It may appear as though only the thin, painted, or covered surface is all that is left of the wood piece.
  • Swarms: Swarmer termites may be visible inside your home or outside of it. Drywood termites form small swarms of 10 to 100 swarmers. They are attracted to light and may appear surrounding windows or light fixtures.
  • Wings: Once swarmer termites land on the ground, they then break off their wings, leaving them on surfaces throughout your home. You may also find them in spider webs. The presence of these wings could indicate your home has become infested with drywood termites.

Unfortunately, most homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover termite damage, making the damage generated by these pest infestations quite costly. To reduce your risk of termite damage, it is recommended that your home be inspected annually by the qualified technicians of Price Termite & Pest Control. Our experts will thoroughly inspect your home, accurately identify the presence of drywood termite and provide you with a professional recommendation for treatment to eliminate the infestation.
